Seminole Heights Community Garden

The Seminole Heights Community Garden was founded by the residents of Seminole Heights who wanted a place where they could grow their own fresh vegetables. The Violet Street Garden is a temporary location generously donated by Linda Ketley of Seminole Heights. During the next two years at Violet Street, the members of the community garden will plan to create other permanent locations throughout Seminole Heights as satellite gardens for what is hoped to be a large enough location to provide a fresh market of locally grown, organic food.

Alexander Elementary School

Located in the Pinecrest Neighborhood in District 58, Alexander Elementary has been recognized as an “A-Plus” School by the Florida Department of Education. Recently, the school hosted MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” TV program. During this show a panel discussion was held on the role of “educational entrepreneurs” in improving our nation’s public schools. Audience members spoke with the panelists and shared their views on how to help other public schools achieve the level of success that Alexander Elementary School has attained.

Hispanic Academic All Stars

Education is one of the most serious issues facing Hispanics in America today. While more Hispanics are earning advanced degrees, young Hispanics often need to be encouraged to further their education in institutions of higher learning. Univision Tampa created the Hispanic Academic All-Stars event 18 years ago to focus on the importance of continued education.

The 2010 Hispanic Academic All-Stars Scholarship salutes the top three Hispanic high school seniors in each school in Hillsborough County. Among those honored were the following graduates from District 58: Leto High School: Daniel Santos, David Garcia, Kevin Espinal; Tampa Catholic High School: Laura Henni, Ariel Guyl, Shannon Maestre. These students will appear in a 60-second capsule that will air on the station for three weeks.
